Cellulose derivatives for pharmaceutical and food applications
Pharma Industry
Cellulose excipients can make a valuable contribution to various areas of pharmaceutical technology, for example as film coatings, binders and thickeners.
The compressed tablet is the most popular dosage form in use today. About two-thirds of all prescriptions are dispensed as solid dosage forms, and half of these are compressed tablets. The cellulose excipients can include as binders or granulating agents, disintegrates to ensure efficient tabletting.
Pellets are used for controlled drug release products following coating with
a suitable polymer coat and filled into hard shelled gelatin/ hypromellose
capsules. Cellulose excipients is applicable for pellet extrusion and pellet
coating for either sub and functional coating.
Cellulose has a variety of functions, for examples, in enhancing water
retention, thickening, acting as a protective colloid due to its surface
activity, solid dispersion, and film formation.
